Sonder is a modern hospitality company that revolutionized the traditional hotel experience by incorporating a digital “front desk” through its mobile app. This app, under my engineering leadership, has achieved a Top 200 ranking among Travel Apps in the App Store and has been used by over 500,000 users.
Key achievements:
Built and scaled the Sonder mobile app, leveraging React Native within a Rails monolith, helping it achieve a Top 200 ranking in the App Store (Travel category) and serve 500,000+ active users.
Designed and led development of the guest-to-agent messaging platform, delivering real-time support via React (agent UI), Salesforce, and Sendbird, and integrating Gifted Chat and RN into the guest experience within the app.
Shipped high-value guest features, including a reservation calendar, a redesigned “My Stay” screen, and mobile key functionality, directly improving booking flexibility, usability, and guest satisfaction.
In 2023, I was promoted to the team’s Engineering Manager. My focus shifted to enhancing the platform's backbone, prioritizing quality, stability, and development efficiency. Notable projects include the implementation of a shared Analytics Platform and “Froyo,” a cutting-edge mock session platform that uses Mercurius to emulate GraphQL endpoints, and an End-to-End (E2E) testing platform designed to identify regressions before every app release.
