S.O.S. / Black Tabs

2013

S.O.S. / Black Tabs is a collaboration I did with Raphael Melgar and Jocelyn Mo where we delved into the complex and often misunderstood world of LSD. This project aims to shed light on the darker aspects of the psychedelic experience.

The core of this project involved gathering personal accounts that detailed negative experiences with LSD. These narratives were then interwoven with visually striking and โ€œtrippyโ€ animations, designed to mirror the disorienting and sometimes disturbing nature of these experiences. To bring these visuals to life, we integrated a sound-reactive element and had our visuals dynamically change in response to auditory stimuli.

A key aspect of this project was the performance aspect, where we used kazoos to emit a continuous Morse code signal for "S.O.S." (represented by the sequence "... --- ..."). This auditory component was not only a creative expression of our theme but also actively influenced the visual display in real-time, symbolizing the distress signals often unnoticed in individuals' struggles with psychedelic substances.

Through S.O.S. / Black Tabs, we aimed to create a multi-sensory experience that was not only artistically engaging but also served as a poignant reminder of the complex and sometimes hidden realities of drug use.
